Could Current Weather Conditions Re-traumatise those Affected by the 2011 Floods?

The 2011 floods in Queensland have had a huge impact on those in their pathway, and also on those who had been looking on in disbelief. This impact continues, not only in the physical work required to help bring the state back into normal operation but also the psychological trauma of those who were affected.

With current widespread torrential rain causing flooding across south- east Queensland and
continued wet weather forecast for the rest of the week, what psychological impact could this be
having on the people of QLD?

Time for a new Aussie Stereotype

Variously called “First Landing Day”, “Foundation Day”, “Anniversary Day” and “Survival Day”, January 26 has been celebrated officially as Australia Day since 1946. Over the years, this day of commemoration has collected many layers of significance as we evolve in national identity and maturity.

This Thursday we are invited to reflect on what it means to each of us to be Australian in 2012, and how this influences the way we relate to ourselves, each other and our history.

Alone at Christmas

A recent survey conducted by Relationships Australia, discovered that up to 15% of the country reported frequently feeling lonely.

Running Start for Youth Campaign

Today Ipswich State High School hosted the launch of a 27 day youth diversity campaign aimed at raising awareness for the social and emotional wellbeing of young people in rural QLD.

Project Yellow, an initiative of Relationships Australia Queensland (RAQ), will see Counsellor, Chris Pye, run a distance of 500 kilometres, between Ipswich and Roma, visiting 27 schools to talk to students about social inclusion and diversity.

As of the 23rd of May, 2011 Relationships Australia in Manunda will be relocating and merging services with the Family Relationship Centre at 125 Grafton Street, Cairns.


“Merging the two venues will ensure all our services will now be available from the one
convenient location and also strengthen our capacity to support individuals, and families
throughout the Cairns region” said Venue Manager Amy Edan.
